The Museo Egizio has recently been completely renewed. The buildings have been renovated, the exhibition installation laid out on new principles and the communication of the collection to the public has been updated. This is accompanied by new goals for research and study, an ambitious policy of social inclusion and a different approach to disseminating the scholarly contents. We intend to offer new formative projects, which can be integrated into the educational planning of the different courses of study and deal with the material qualities of objects, the metahistory of the museum and its collection, the reception of ancient Egypt in the literature, history and the art of the West. This ambitious project seeks to make the study of ancient Egypt part of the school curriculum, tailored to the programmes of individual schools.

In this activity the workshop precedes the guided tour.

This enables the students to learn the essentials of hieroglyphic writing. They can then experiment with it in the exhibition rooms on the guided tour.

To identify words and phrases on the exhibits, the students are supplied with a teaching sheet about phonetic values and determinatives.

At the end of the museum activities, teachers will receive a test to give their students, with instructions for the final assessment.

The guided tour illustrates a choice of exhibits of different types and materials. The young people learn to observe them and recognise their special features.
The workshop proposes the compilation of a “Sheet for interpreting the work”, choosing among the masterpieces presented during the visit, and a subsequent discussion about the contents identified by the students.
This is followed by themed study aimed to bring out the interest and influence that the emblematic elements of Egyptian art had in later artistic production.
As a test to be performed in class, other images of the Museo Egizio’s collection will be presented to teachers. They will be used by each of the students to compile an interpretation sheet, to then be assessed by their teacher.

This is a specific itinerary devoted to the interpretation of Egypt in the classical world, by reading passages from famous Greek and Latin authors.
Before the visit, teachers can request texts in Greek, Latin and Italian as reference materials for introductory purposes.
Significant exhibits in the exhibition rooms are identified that will enable us to highlight the most characteristic aspects of ancient Egyptian culture and its perception by Western civilisations.
The information acquired during the visit will be subjected to a test to be performed in the classroom, complete with correction keys.

Guided tour of 120 minutes

The route passes through the exhibition rooms with a particular concern not only for the exhibits but also the “container” (building, rooms, vitrines) and the display equipment. In each of the rooms, there is a focus on some technical solutions for preserving objects and their archaeological and/or thematic context.
In the course of the workshop, the technical information needed to set up a virtual museum room is provided, supported by examples supplied by the operators. This design practice enables the students to combine their own creativity with knowledge and the ability to develop ideas in an architectural space. The choices can be made on the basis of a theme, a typological affinity or a narrative path, while respecting the dimensions and weight of each exhibit.

The experience will continue in the classroom. The students will receive photographs and fact sheets of the exhibits in the Museum, plans and elevations of the display cabinets and the floor plan of a room, so that they can complete the design. They will be asked to complete the set up by means of the graphic-educational apparatus. Their teacher will be responsible for assessing their work.

The guided tour begins with an introduction to the excavations conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission in Egypt in the early 20th century. The route unfolds through the Galleries of Material Culture to explore the materials and techniques of fabrication used by the Egyptians and their principal craft products.
The visit continues with the discovery of the archaeological contexts found at the principal sites investigated, including Gebelein, Assiut and Deir el-Medina.
During the workshop, students learn the main excavation techniques and ways of documenting finds. This knowledge enables students to compile an “Archaeological Find Sheet” complete with technical data and photographs of each object.
Students will also receive a test to be done in the classroom. Teachers will be provided with the correction keys.
